Chapter 3: Learning to Write

Thinking like writers helps children develop an understanding how stories are structured, the author’s tone or voice, and the intention of a piece of writing – all of which are skills that support reading comprehension. And, though we often think of spelling as a skill that is no longer as necessary with the advent of technology, or a skill that is best learned through memorization, it is important to recognize that spelling is an important skill that can foster reading development. Both composing and spelling are skills that develop over time and require you to shape your child’s behavior, to get more and more accurate output.
